Budget Crisis continues in Ypsilanti

Michigan's Ann Arbor News (12/18, Hachem) reports, "After another seven hours of discussion, Ypsilanti [Michigan] city officials still haven't finished budget cuts to address a $3.3 million deficit over the next three years." The council has held two consecutive "meetings to discuss cuts -- and will now meet again early next month to finish the job." [From ICMA News Briefing]

I used to work in Ypsilanti for two years and am acquainted to many officials and familiar with the financial conditions there. Budget situation was so bad in the city that it heavily relied on EMU intern students, many were introduced through my political science internship program. I even interned there, acting like a student, for one day in the financial office to fulfill a requirement for a service-learning seminar.

Like a person suffering from frostbite, the city had to reduced blood circulation in the peripheral to sustain its critical functions. When the severe condition continues, however, there is a danger that the whole city is dying.
