Peoria (AZ) to explore privatizing jail services

The AZcentral.com (5/7, Chan) reported that the city of Peoria is considering privatizing jail services, because of "the cost to put people in county jails on the increase each year." Maricopa County, where the city is located, is predicting an 8 percent increase in the jail incarceration fee in fiscal year 2009 for Peoria, a $108,000 jump to $383,000. City Manager Terry Ellis said he would "convene a strategic work group" to explore the idea, and Peoria would likely need to partner with another city to interest a private provider.
