Flyer for the upcoming Global Policy Seminar: China's Population Policy (March 25, 2008)
The one-child policy in China was introduced in 1979 to alleviate the overpopulation problem. In the past three decades the policy has successfully reduced the population growth and fertility rate in China. However, the policy is controversial both within and outside China because of the manner in which the policy has been implemented; because of unindented consequences such as the imbalanced sex ratio at birth; and because of concerns about negative economic and social consequences with an aging population. In this seminar I will present the policy's background, related issues in particular the imbalanced sex ratio at birth, and current discussions about the policy's future direction.
